Fortunately, these problems can often be solved very simply. In the first instance, it is wise to look at your setup, because your setup will have a huge influence on the ultimate success or failure of the shot.

If you’re a beginner, your swinging problems may be caused by a failure to grasp the basics. On the other hand, if you’re an experienced player, you may have developed some bad habits or adjusted your swinging action to compensate for issues elsewhere. Whatever your circumstances, addressing the basics of the swing is an excellent place to start.

Golf Swing Help: Addressing a Swing

First, make sure that your feet are approximately shoulder width apart (further apart if you are playing in windy conditions) so you have a firm base from which to strike the ball. Remember, balance is key to a good shot.

Ensure that the toes of your left foot are not positioned to the left. Instead, your toes should be pointing directly in front of you.

When addressing a swing, the ball should always be positioned in the middle of your feet.

Before getting down to the ball, make sure that your knees are not locked. Try bouncing them gentle a few times; the knees should feel firm and solid, but not tense.

When you have been playing for a while, it can be easy to overlook simple things like keeping your back straight. It can be tough to be aware of the position of your own body, so you may find it helpful to have a friend check your form or practice your stance in front of a mirror.

When preparing for the shot, extend your arms and make sure that the club is directly in front of you. Then, lower the club head keeping it parallel to the ground.

Bend at the hips until the club head reaches the ground. This is the only point during the setup that you should use your hips. This is another part of the setup that should be practiced slowly so you can monitor the movements of your body.

Once you are happy with the setup, you should look at the backswing, which should be smooth and, most importantly straight. In order to achieve a good swing it is important that your arms, shoulders and hips are working in one continuous motion.

Many golfer experts will tell you that once you have mastered the first two feet of the swing, the rest will naturally follow. It is certainly true that with the right setup and backswing your swing will be in pretty good shape.
