Golf Putting Instruction
Putting is one of the most important parts of the game of golf. Not only will an inability to putt add strokes to your score, but it will also be terribly embarrassing out on the greens.
That said, even the most naturally gifted golfer can have difficulty getting to grips with putting.
Therefore, whether you are a complete beginner or just need some advice, the following golf putting instruction will help to improve your putt and your overall game.
- Perhaps the most important putting instruction, and one you have probably heard many times before, is to read the green. The main things you are looking for are undulations or other idiosyncrasies that will alter the path of the ball. Reading the green accurately takes time and practice, but, as a beginner, it is a good idea not to second-guess yourself or think too much about the green. Obviously, it is a good idea to get down and look at the grass to see how the ball will react to the surface of the green, but, when in doubt, just aim for the hole. This may not always work out as you hope, but it is a good backup plan.
- During a putt, you may find it beneficial to imagine that the only joints in your body are your shoulders. While putting, all the work should come from the shoulders, so it is advisable to lock your knees, elbows and wrists. Conversely, your shoulders should feel loose and free moving. Often, trouble with putting stems from stiffness in the shoulders, which leads to jerky movements.
- This putting instruction is perhaps easier said than done. Nevertheless, you need to try to minimize the amount of mistakes you make by preempting the possible ones. Of course, you will make mistakes from time to time; even the pros will occasionally fluff a putt. However, there are some mistakes that can be avoided. For example, if you are putting downhill, the biggest mistake you can make is to strike the ball too hard. Similarly, if you are looking at an uphill shot make sure that you hit it hard enough. Additionally, it is always wise to avoid a soggy patch of green, as it is almost impossible to putt a ball that is bogged down in a puddle of water.
- Although this putting instruction may seem a little peculiar, it can work wonders: Before taking the shot, visualize the ball heading into that hole. Obviously, it is not possible to will the balls into the holes, but this exercise does help you to focus and, most importantly, rid your mind of any negativity that may be lurking there.
Of course, these are very basic putting instructions, but they will prove useful to beginners and those who struggle with their putting action. However, above all else, practice is the key to putting success.
Like many things in life, where putting is concerned, practice will make perfect. So learn from this golf putting instruction and watch you golf performance go from strength to strength!
