Exercises That Will Improve Putting

There are numerous putting drills that are designed to improve putting skills. These practice exercises can be incredibly useful for not only beginners, but also experienced players.

Moreover, you may choose to practice putting drills to maintain rather than improve putting skills, particularly throughout the winter months.

Listed below are three exercises that are intended to enhance your putting ability. Obviously, there are many more and you may even choose to create your own putting drills. However, the following will provide a guide to the type of putting drills you should aim for.

Circle Putting Drill

To complete the circle putting drill you will need a putter, eight golf balls and a target. This exercise can be performed on the putting green, in which case the target will be the hole, or in your home. Simply place the eight balls around the target at various distances.

Typically, it is advisable to place the first ball at one foot from the target, the second ball at two feet etc., but depending on the space available, you may need to adjust your distances to suit you room. When you are happy with the position of your balls, start with the ball nearest the target and putt them one by one. However, try not to take too much time between shots.

The Wall Putting Drill

The aim of the wall drill is to improve putting swing. Often, golfers can find this proves to be an interesting exercise, as it throws up some revealing information about a golfer’s putting swing. All you need is a putter, a golf ball and a wall.

Take the putter in hand and stand facing a wall; you will need to be close enough so that the putter head is only one inch away from the wall. Then strike your ball with a normal putting action and watch the path of the putter head. While standing close to the wall, any slight deviation in the path of the swing is highlighted.

Putting Target Practice

This is a popular putting drill, because it can also be a lot of fun, especially if you are able to practice with a friend. The target drill is designed to improve putting accuracy. You will need a putter, a golf ball and some paper. First, a little arts and crafts is required, because you need to make three circles of differing sizes from paper.

The smallest circle should be no larger than a golf ball; the middle circle should be double the size and the largest one needs to be approximately double the size of the middle circle. Place these circles onto the floor to create something that resembles a dartboard.

The aim is to get as close to the center as possible. If you would like to add a competitive edge to the game, you can assign points to each circle, for example 50 for the center, 20 for the middle and 10 for the outer, and keep a tally of your score over ten shots.

As mentioned above, these are just some of the drills that can improve putting skills and increase your confidence on the putting green.
