Best Putting Practice Drills

Putting practice is important for all golfers whether they are pros or beginners. In the winter, it can be difficult to stay on top of your putting practice, because you are not always able to get out on the golf course as often as you would like to.

Therefore, it is good to have some putting drills that can be practiced indoors come rain or shine. Below you will find three of the best putting practice exercises that will help your swing action and accuracy.

Circular Putting Practice

This putting drill is designed to improve your accuracy at various distances. First, select a target, which should be the size of a golf hole. Next, take eight golf balls and place them in a circular pattern around the target.

The first golf ball should be only one foot away from the target, the second ball should be two feet away and so on. Your eighth ball should be eight feet away from the target, but will obviously depend on the space you have available.

The aim of this putting practice is to putt each of the balls into the target, starting from the ball that is closest and working outwards. Try not to think too much about each putt, just play it as quickly as you can. Once you have putted all eight balls, replace them and try again, but, on the second attempt, work from the furthest ball inwards.

Target Putting Practice

Target practice is another putting exercise that is designed to enhance a golfer’s accuracy. However, this putting practice can become a fun and competitive game.

First, you will need to make a target that looks like a dartboard. To do this, you will need to make three circles of paper that increase in size. Ideally, the first and smallest piece will be the size of a golf ball, the second needs to be about twice the size of the first and the third should be twice the size of the second.

Each section of the target can then be appointed with a score, for example 50 points for the center, 20 for the middle and 10 for the outer. See how high you can score with ten balls.

Wall Putting Drill

If you are a beginner, you may find that it is your putting swing that is causing problems. It is important that the club remains straight and smooth throughout your swing.

This putting practice exercise is a wonderful way to assess the form of your swing. Stand facing a wall so that when holding a putter it is approximately one inch from the wall. Attempt to strike a ball from this position with your normal swing.

While standing this close to a wall, it is easy to see any slight deviation in your swing that could be causing a problem.

These are three putting practice exercises that are bound to improve your performance. Obviously, there are many more and you may find that some putting drills work better for you than others. However, the above drills are an excellent place to start.
